Day Three took us to the River Nile. We started the day with this book about Cleopatra. She had a colorful, tragic life. Ellie was particularly interested in her death by snake...
When she realized what it meant for Cleopatra to put her hand in the basket with the sand viper, Ellie exclaimed "She killed herself?! What a waste of life!"
After we finished discussing the book, the kids and I got to work. They colored their snake headbands while I cut boxes to make cardboard pyramids.
Anthony especially loved getting into the smaller pyramid.
I found a hieroglyphic alphabet, and Ellie figured out how to write her name on one side of the pyramid, along with a few other messages. Meanwhile, the little ones decorated the other sides of the pyramid.
For lunch, I made mummies with crescent roll dough cut into strips and wrapped around hot dogs. The kids loved them!
After I came back downstairs, we made golden slime. The kids always love playing with slime, and the gold reminded us of Cleopatra's fancy jewelry.
In fact, we made some cool golden slime Egyptian jewelry!
The slime can get really messy, so after putting it away and cleaning up (they even got some in their hair!), we did a much cleaner activity: Cleopatra color by number.
I also found some cool paper pyramids that we colored and put together. They were just the right size for Lego people to use as tents.
Of course, little pyramid tents eventually wouldn't be enough, and we made a Lego pyramid.
Cleopatra traveled down the Nile River in her boat.
As each day goes by, our house looks more and more like it took a trip through history and the world... I hope the kids are learning and having fun!
